Memorial service for David Mortlock

Ascot Brass and Reading Central Salvation Army band joined on the stage at Reading SA on 16th October to accompany a service in memory of retired bandmaster David Mortlock, who passed away in March 2020.

David was a good friend of Ascot Brass, who often attended rehearsals and filled in on horn or baritone when needed. His two sons Simon and Paul have both played in the band, and David featured as accompanist to Simon in concerts when Simon performed pieces on the flute. Several speakers recalled with great warmth their memories of David's inspirational teaching ability. As well as hymns, the service included several of David's favourite pieces, among them Constant Trust by Eric Ball, Soli Deo Gloria by William Himes, and the Prelude on Lavenham by Geoffrey Nobes.
